I am recommending that you replace all the existing grass in your backyard. This will allow your yard to be native, use less water to keep grass alive but still give you the look of a low tidy grass. I am recommending a stair stepped approach to the grasses. The lowest grass at 6" would be buffalo grass. The next at 12-18" would be blue grama grass and the highest grass area would be 24"-36". This would be a mix of foraging plants. I am listing them out below. Indian Ricegrass, Oryzopsis hymenoides Sideoats grama, Bouteloua curtipendula Sand Lovegrass, Eragrostis tricodes Goldenrod, Solidago canadensis White Aster, aster ericoides Ironweed, Veronia marginata Prairie Sage, Artemisia Purple coneflower, echinacea purpurea Milkweed, Asclepias syriaca

Thin then head. Leave some outer so light filters. Make hole for picking. Thinning to reduce weight. Also look for little ones to replace bigger branches. Coarse to fine.
